Ducking their heads and turning to the side, it was a sight to behold.
I’d seen the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Clash and Elvis Costello before and they’d all been replaced by some new talent in their early 30s.
And yet I had never seen so many musicians die, it felt like.
There was one exception.
It was the drummer, Keith Richards, who died aged 63 in February after a string of heart attacks.

(Getty) Keith, a former Rolling Stones drummer and the father of the late David Bowie (who died in 2002), was the first musician to die in 2017, having joined the band as a 25-year-old at the age of 24.
His death was widely mourned across the music industry and in the arts, and the death was met with a wave of tribute.
Some people were even going so far as to declare Richards’ death a gift to the industry.
Keith Richards was a rock star.
He played with rock bands, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Clash, and he was one of the most revered musicians of his generation.
I was so touched and moved by his passing.
He was a great artist, a great soul, a very brave soul.
He could have done a lot more.
Keith was a friend and a fellow musician, and I’m so sad to hear his death.
But I do wonder whether this was the result of an accident or something more sinister.
It’s hard to know what might have been.
It seems unlikely that the world would have been so ready to celebrate Richards’ passing, had his death been linked to the deaths of Michael Jackson and Prince Charles.
I’ve always wondered what the future might have held if this had happened 20 years ago.
And it doesn’t help that there is so much of his music that has already been lost.
Richards was known as one of Britain’s most influential drummers, and his sound had a strong impact on the UK’s burgeoning drum and bass scene.
Richards has been hailed as one half of the legendary drum and keyboard duo the Doors, with David Bowie also a member.
The band formed in 1976, but had a string-banging influence on the music of the 1960s and 70s, with songs such as “Love Me Do” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” making the front cover of Time magazine.
But their greatest hit, “You Won’t Find Another Woman Like Me” in 1975, was a pop song about a failed relationship, and Richards’ solo career was never as successful as that of the Doors.
In 2000, Richards joined the London band The Edge, which had already released a string in their catalogue, including two of their best-known songs, “One More Time” and the title track, “All Alone”.
The band would go on to record a series of hits, including “All in a Day’s Work”, “The Night of the Hunter” and their biggest hit, the smash hit “The Day”.
In 2007, the band announced Richards would be taking up a new role as a producer.
The group made their debut in 2015 with their hit “A Day in the Life”.
The album, which also featured a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lonesome Lady”, sold nearly 3 million copies and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Richards, with the help of producer Michael Ball, was able to capture the essence of the band’s sound.
He then went on to work with the likes in the electronic dance music scene, creating the electronic beat of The-Dreams.
It seemed to work for him, and after a series and a half of collaborations with artists including Bruno Mars, the electronic-pop group Disclosure and the electronic band Mura Masa, Richards has since made a name for himself with the band, as well as with his own music.
It’s a lot to take in.
It feels like Keith Richards is still playing in his music, but in a different way, playing a completely different style to the way he did in his youth.
And with all that being said, I don’t think that the death of Keith Richards has anything to do with the music he made in the 60s and 1970s.
He didn’t have the same influence as people like Prince, David Bowie and Michael Jackson.
I just think he was a really talented man.
I think he would have had an amazing career.
I hope that he’s playing the drums, I hope he’s going to play the keyboards, I think that he is going to be a great musician.
Keith, a lifelong fan of the Stones, was an inspiration to so many.
He left the band when they were still performing in London and took a job in the US as a record producer.
